Julius C. Wilkie Steamboat CenterLevee ParkMain Street on the Mississippi telephone Number - 507-454-6880In 1956 the Winona County Historical Society purchased the James P. Pearson, a steamboat, and placed it in Levee Park as a symbol of their river history. The money for this purchase was donated by the Wilkie Foundations and the boat was renamed the Julius C. Wilkie, a pioneer machinist. The original Wilkie exists until March 22, 1981, when it was destroyed by fire. Through the combined efforts of the Wilkie Foundation and the dedication of the Winona community, a replica of the Wilkie was built and opened on April 11, 1983. Located on the first deck is a museum: containing river memorabilia and a slide presentation for private parties, business meetings and receptions throughout the entire year. Sugar LoafSugar Loaf is an unusual limestone formation that is perched on a 500-foot bluff at the SE edge of town. The Sioux once held ceremonies on the monolith. A foot trail leads to the stone, which is lighted at night.
