In the mid-19th century, Horace Greeley offered the immortal advice to Josiah B. Grinnell, GO WEST, YOUNG MAN. Grinnell took that to heart and settled in Iowa, founding the college that now bears his name. The campus of this prestigious institution is reknowned throughout the midwest as an idyllic campus with significant architecture and historical buildings.
Grinnell Historical MuseumDowntown Grinnell is both a commercial center and a residential community. Many of the buildings date back over 100 years. Stores are located at street level, and living space for dozens of people exits on the second and third stories of these buildings. Regular downtown events make it a great place to visit. Most of downtown Grinnell is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Faulconer GalleryGrinnells railroad depot was completed in 1893 and housed the offices of two intersecting rail lines, the Chicago and Rock Island and the Central of Iowa. Although it was renovated in 1996 and became a restaurant, many Grinnellians still remember boarding and alighting from trains in the historic building.
